Michael Barney – A Day in the Life
October 14 – December 15, 2017
Applecrate Galleries is thrilled to present an exclusive exhibition featuring the works of Michael Barney. Michael Barney, a member of the Manotick Art Association has captured on canvas in oils, people who are doing what they enjoy, such as floating on a lazy day in the lake or decked out in hockey gear.
Michael Barney’s interest in art started to gel as a pre-teen in Cornwall, Ontario. For Christmas as a twelve year old He received a box of oil pastels and paper. Portraiture seemed to be the most fun for him. In time he switched to chalk pastels. After graduation from Hillcrest High in Ottawa and with encouragement from his art teacher, Mike enrolled in a three year applied program at St. Lawrence College in Cornwall, Ontario, graduating in 1971 with a major in painting. He has been producing artwork for over 50 years. Mike worked for the Federal Government for thirty years with most years spent in the National Archives of Canada. During this time, Mike painted for his own enjoyment.
Now retired, Michael paints full time, either in his studio in his home or at his cottage studio, with painting projects always on-going. Mike is a member of the Manotick Art Association (MAA) and has participated in the MAA’s spring shows. He also enjoys teaching occasionally and regularly enjoys painting with other like-minded artists, sharing ideas and enjoying each other’s company.
For this show Mike included water sports, soccer, skiing, fishing, swimming, artists at work, beach fun, as well as a grandmother and grandson. Michael believes the happy facial expressions, a quiet talk, determination and spending a quiet time alone fishing, will speak to viewers in a very personal tone that they can relate to. A few of the depictions are current Manotick residents who are members of the MAA. Hopefully they will enjoy seeing themselves.
The vernissage will be held Saturday, October 14th, from 6-9pm. Come to the gallery and share an evening with like minded art lovers, and enjoy some refreshments while discussing the show with Michael and other friends. Applecrate Galleries is located at 5530 Manotick Main Street.
